Life as I know It

Blogging may not be a traditional canine thing to do, but then, I won't ever be considered a "common" dog...No, I'm a Texas born Golden Retriever pup with Cajun roots. (my dad, Max, is from Shreveport, Louisiana) Yep, I'm a 10 lb. big cuddly ball of fur, my adoptive mom says! I am one of 13 pups born to parents, Max and Millie, in their very first litter. I was born in DeKalb, Texas, near the Arkansas border, exactly six weeks and five days ago.  Lauren, my "big sister," let me sleep, wrapped around her shoulder, part of the way home. We stopped every hour for breaks & photo ops! After picking up dog food, some new toys & a collar & leash at Petsmart, Lauren laid down in the back of the car with me, and we slept together the rest of the way home! (I must remind her of a favorite plush throw; she couldn't seem to stop hugging me!)

For the last 6 days, I've been living with my eclectic adoptive family in Georgetown, Texas, close to Austin and about 350 miles from where I was born. My new 'mum' is a die-hard Yankee, with all the peculiar implications of being raised in New England. Her heart is in Rhode Island but her feet are in a pair of Ariat boots! She loves music from the '70s, but listens to Blake Shelton and Kenny Chesney while I run around the yard like Don Quixote, jumping and biting at every dandelion I can reach when the cool breezes bend them low enough!

My adopted dad, Martin, had his heart broken twice before, when their other two Goldens, Bandana & Madi (Madonna Dreamer) died. When their daughter, Lauren, moved back home, she brought her bouncing baby girl, Sophie Marie. That 8 lb chihuahua terrier mix dog, won Martin's heart by jumping up into his lap, sleeping at the end of the bed, & waking him up in the morning with all kinds of warm, wet little kisses! She revived his love for a faithful companion, & he was very excited to meet me!

Which brings me to Sophie. Now what can I say about this girl.... I was used to my big, beautiful, gentle Mom, and my sweet sisters... so I guess you could say I know my way around the ladies!  And every female I've ever seen, has hugged me & complemented me (ad nauseum) about how sweet I am, how cute, how absolutely lovable... But Sophie was different. She weighs less than me, though we're close in height. She walks on her hind legs (Now that's wrong on so many levels!) and jumps into laps & furniture from a sitting position. (I have tried this, too, but can't hide the fact that I'm heavier than her... my bottom weighs me down & I tumble to the floor! I've developed good reflexes!) Then, when she lays down, her front paws cross, and the rest of her body lies flat, with her stomach touching the floor & her feet sticking out the sides! She must have been a professional ballerina once, because she dances on command!

I ran to greet her with one of my naturally gregarious & energetic hugs, but she didn't react as others had. And she gave me "the eye" when I walked over to her 'toy bowl' & tried out some of her squeaky stuffed animals!  I didn't understand this, cuz my sibs & I were very close. We rough-tumbled & played all the time! I wasn't sure what I'd have to do to win her over. We were cordial with each other over the next few days. I guess I sort of grew on her. Or maybe she realized I was here to stay! Anyway, by the end of the week, we were enjoying playing together in the yard & all I could think of was what Sally Fields said the nite she won an Oscar for "Norma Rae"..."You LIKE me, you REALLY like me!"     (February 1, 2013)
